Getting Started with Lightburn - Featuring the Lasermatic MK2 laser
I often hear that Lightburn is confusing and difficult to figure out. So, I've put together this video to show you which version you need, how to configure your laser in Lightburn, and how to work with the basic layers and operations to make your first project.
The Lasermatic MK2 is a great laser that takes much of the guess work out of getting started in laser engraving. If you are interested in it check them out using my affiliate link below.

What is the bed size i. e max area which can be engraved?
Wow! All that prep work is really impressive! It was delightful to see video. Thank you!
Thank you, Steve. This was a useful guide for starting from the beginning.
Thank you! I know it's not new information for some, but I get many questions about the initial setup that I wanted a video I could send people to for help getting started.
Thank you for the video very helpful. Question I have a co2 laser and use xcs in order to take advantage of the camera, features in the laser. I’m looking into possible using lightburn to only build files and export to xcs can you use the G scope version to build files for the co2 or would I need to purchase the DSP version?
thank you...just got our S1 today....you really helped get me running
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts
Hi. These are 12inches wide. Do you recommended anything similar that is 24inches wide? Thank you.
Due to the cost of shipping it will be hard to find anything over about 12x20" in the us without paying a lot of freight charges. Local stores vary wildly in what they have so it would be hard to recommend something that I can find locally but might not be available elsewhere. What I would do for larger material is see if you have a local hardwood dealer and ask them what plywoods they can bring in. You'll want something that has a finsh grade veneer and hopefully a poplar core or a light MDF core. From there it will be some trial and error to see if it works well on your specific machine.
@@Vintauri awesome insight thanks for the reply. I was thinking just going to home Depot and cutting up a full sheet of maple plywood but maybe that's not the best option.?
Hola amigo, tengo un Sculpfun S30 Pro, crees que si sea compatible el mandril ortur ?
Super interested in seeing more about this laser.
I'm going to spend the next week to ten days testing it out and then should be able to get some good information out about it! How is the new Co2 laser working out for you?
@@Vintauri Can't wait to see the videos about it. it's is so amazing. Still working on dialing in all the settings but it's so nice cutting thick wood out and the edges are so clean. Being able to cut clear acrylic is so nice already made a few signs incorporating cleat acrylic.
Is this comparable to the f1 ultra minis the conveyor?
It's very similar in the power ratings of the dual 20w galvo laser, this one does have a sliding platform add-on as well as a rotary. Plus I believe some more options coming soon that will make it even better.
Excited to see you test this.
Me too! I think it will be the most portable 20w fiber I've used and will have the 20w diode laser option as well!
Good evening hey didn't you test the ikier 70 watt if you did what did you think of it please
I have the Atomstack 70w laser which is very similar to the Ikier. I do like it for increasing your speed on cutting. I need to build a larger enclosure for it and will get more projects out with it soon.
Do you place anything between the back and front of the shirt to avoid the ink from passing to the other side of the t shirt?
I slid it around the board so that just the back of the shirt was on top of the board when applying the ink.
@@Vintauri thanks
Ooooo Hay you should try 3D depth map on a coin 😮
Omg lucky you got for free 😋 too cool
what paper did you use
It was some tracing paper that you can find in most arts and craft stores. Otherwise here is a link to Amazon. amzn.to/3VVvJ8T
I just got the ATEZR 36w and need a setting it up on computer. Do you know of any vids of that?
Great video. The white cable is also for the ATEZR L2 series.
Thanks for the info! Each laser's stepper controller can be different with the pin out so It's hard to test every laser for compatibility.
Thanks for this Video. I followed along and learned quiet a lot. When I cut my to samples, it did not engrave, the power, speed or type file it was cutting. Such as cutting test or engraving test. Any ideals would be appreciated. Thanks again.
How clever is that! thank you for sharing
Glad you liked it!
qual software para fazer esse tipo de gravação
I use OBS for a lot of my recordings where I switch from computer to the camera, otherwise I edit in Adobe Premiere.
Good video, but you're working way too hard on centering the piece on the laser. All you need to do is clamp down a piece of cardboard, actually cut out the cardboard the size of the board, and then place the board inside the cardboard cutout on the laser bed. I personally just take a picture of the work piece, trace it in light burn and then cut that trace out of the cardboard to lay my piece onto the laser bed. Perfect alignment every time and repeatable. Again, thanks for the video.
Yeah I would do that if I was going to do more than a couple. But on one offs I just use the framing function rather than burn up extra material.
Cool project!
Thanks, I've done a few of these and it's always an adventure with the abnormalities of the lids.
Thanks for this video. I have the Atomstack A5 and Lightburn software and have just ordered the extension kit. My machine is against a wall so when I extend the y axis it will be parallel to the wall with the computer monitor mounted on the wall. I was wondering if there is any way to change lightburn to match the orientation of the machine. Ideally with the 850 mm rails being the X axis Parrell to the wall with the 410 mm rails being the y axis perpendicular to the wall.
Excellent tutorial! Very helpful to get me started with my 20w S1 that I unboxed yesterday.
What is the point of starting and calculating kerf with inches if you are gonna end up using millimeter in the end? Was it just to illustrate conversion?
With the majority of the world using metric and many machines and software defaulting to it as well, I try to use both units to get people used to the conversion.
I set my s1 up yesterday. This has really helped. One question. It's the test material pack it came with leather but there is no leather option on xcs. How would I know what settings to use? Cant seem the find it anywhere online
It would depend on the type of leather. I recently did a video using the xTool S1 to make hat patches from Leatherette. I was engraving it at 300mm/sec and 20% power and cutting it at 16mm/sec and 65% power. Otherwise if you have enough material you can run a speed and power test on it. ruclips.net/video/NYZdJ3xTsMg/видео.html
@Vintauri amazing thankyou. It was very thin. Just one of the test sheets it came with. Also it came with glass disks but no setting for that either. Read online you have to treat or paint the glass first. Just confused why they have put these materials in there that a beginner has no idea about haha.
Disappointed my order was canceled because they don’t deliver to Hawaii
That's really disappointing that they give you no option to ship there. I'm sure it's not cheap as it's a large and heavy box.
Wanted to get back to finding a 20watt 10 just isn't Cutting it lol
Some good options out there in the 20w range.
What's that baby run for price to purchase steve-o
It’s going for $1200 right now. shrsl.com/4kuyy
@Vintauri nice price but to much for this guy guess stuck with my 10watt sux 👎 thankx for 411 man
When I place the test, it sounds stuck, it doesn't turn, what's happening in this case?
I would double check that all the wires in the connector are plugged in. Sometimes a single pin can come loose and in this case you will hear a chattering while the stepper will not move.
@@Vintauri Thanks. The chuck does not turn, it stays stuck, it tries to turn to one side then the other and it stays stuck, I don't know if it is a configuration problem in Lightburn. My laser is a sculpfun s30pro diode laser
@@Vintauri I have checked the cables
If you were to have an enclosure and a powered filter air system going to the outside could u use this for a couple hours in an apartment? without sticking up the place or smoking it out. in addition would the neighbors be calling the fire department? lol
Using an enclosure and an inline fan will remove the smoke and generally it's too fine for people to see, however they may smell it and if they have windows close to yours they may complain. It will also leave debris on any window screen that may be in place. The other thing to consider is that the honeycomb or spoilboard will absorb some of the vapors and will smell over time. You can clean these to keep the smell down, but it will be there.
@@Vintauri thanks for the advice. will now not mount it in the window but move exhaust away from building. am going to (over) build my own vent system with abt 300-400 cfm @6inch. with box being outside and pointed mostly up. winds should disperse it. I hope
This was really great
Thank you!
You explained it very well and easy to understand. Thank you..
Glad it was helpful!
Great lesson. Ths is going to be so much better than building a frame. Just wondering. How would you accommodate say a 22mm plexiglass window and a cardstock backing board?
If you have access to a Co2 laser, you could cut a piece of clear acrylic to act as a cover. Or you could make that part just square and cut it conventionally. For a cardstock backer, you'd need to find the right material to make up a spacer for the wood you use. I've done this before using 1/16" basswood plywood as a filler frame along with the chipboard backer.
Thank you for sharing. Everyone stay safe, warm, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
Thanks for watching!
When i try this with my sculpfun s9 it does not show the letters on the side. (It goes really fast)Any idea?
When you open up the Material Test tool, click on the Edit Text Setting button and adjust the power and speed there. That will change the settings just for the test engravings for power and speed.
Though I thought it to work this way this was a thoroughly explained confirmation. Thanks a lot 👍
Glad it helped!
This was great. I recently purchased an S1 and I am trying to map a curved surface but the setting isn’t showing up for me. Do you know how I can fix that?
Have you done the upgrade to the larger diameter tube and the red beam combiner?
Unfortunately I have been unable to find the proper mounts that will fit my laser and the other tube. There is a connecting rod to the two side rails that runs along the tray that takes up too much space.
When is XCS 2.0 actually being released? All I can see is 1.7
2.0 is still in Beta but it is available to everyone at the following link. www.xtool.com/pages/software
Thanks so much! Someone finally showing instead of talking about it!
I try to walk through the process whenever possible. Thanks for watching!
Did you end up making an enclosure for this? I would be interested to see. Thanks for the video. Very clear and helpful.
I've got plans for both this and the 70w machine enclosures that I hope to get to this month. It's taking longer than I'd hope with other priorities getting in the way.
完美
would love to see what you guys could do with revolution ply from lowes. I use this poplar luan alot and would love to buy a diode that would cut this if it can cut as fast as my 60 watt co2 laser. heck i would call you guys if i could...sorry you guys meaning dave at clackshack
Just ordered my module, I also have to swap out the mainboard to get it to work as I have the 4040-pro
Hopefully the mainboard swap is not too bad. Adding this option does make it nice to not worry about having a computer hooked up to the cnc to run it everytime.
Hey Steve What glasses do you need for a diode laser
This is the brand I recommend they have different styles but make sure to get ones that are for the 455nm wavelength and preferably OD 6. amzn.to/3RjbpeJ
Ortur Y-Axis Rotary Chuck For Laser Engraver (YRC1.0) I got this for my Xtool D1 Pro 20W How do I plug it into the Xtool? Thanks
Hi. Would I be able to use this with my Aufero laser machine?
It's the Aufero laser 2
You should be able to use this assuming it has standard wire plugs on the Y axis stepper motor. The kit comes with a couple typical cables to make it work with many machines. However, I cannot verify on this specific machine as I do not have access to one.
